CHARLES H. PATTEN

A native of Oklahoma, Charles H. Patten studied at Stanford Uni-
versity and earned a degree in finance from the University of Okla-
homa. He entered banking in 1930 with the First National Bank of
Edmond, Oklahoma, and was vice president in 1942 when he interrupted
his career to serve four years with the U. S. Air Force, rising to rank of
Major.

Following his discharge in 1945, he joined Valley Bank in Phoenix,
and at his death was the senior Vice President and a member of the
Board of Directors.

Although Mr. Patten collected other areas of Numismatics, his
favorite series was United States Half Dollars. This is evidenced by the
splendid offering in this catalog. We knew Mr. Patten all of his collecting
life and we hope the future owners of these lovely coins will derive the
same pleasure of their ownership as he did.

LOTS 1 - 541

PAUL SUTTON COLLECTION OF
U. S. LARGE CENTS

All coins are attributed to Sheldon (S) and Newcomb (N).

1 1793 S. 10. Wreath type. Vine and bars on edge. A nice Fine, a few circulation

marks on the rim. The surfaces are splendid, and toned a rich chocolate.
Fully worth its current listing.

2 1794 S. 19b. Type of 1793. Fully Fine, this coin nearly falls within the Condition

Census. The surfaces and rims are remarkably clear. The even dark choco-
late color further enhances the beauty of this very rare type.

3 1794 S. 44. The "Short Bust." Good to Very Good, steel and medium brown.

4 1794 S. 55. Without the obverse diebreak. A perfectly charming example of this

Condition Census coin. Fully Very Fine with claims to a higher grade. The
usual peripheral weakness on the reverse. An even medium brown.

5 1794 S. 72. The head of 1795. Very Good. The surface porous, some reverse

edge dinges. Scarce type. Ex C. L. Wallace Collection.

6 1795 S. 74. Lettered edge. "ONE CENT" high in wreath. Very Good, nearly

nice. Dark olive-brown.

7 1795 S. 75. Lettered edge. "ONE CENT" central. Strictly Very Good, with excel-

than that, the coin is virtually perfect. A glossy mahogany brown.

9 1795 S. 78. Plain edge. "ONE CENT" central. Very Good, medium chocolate.

Ex C. L. Wallace.

faces but for two pinpoint digs in the left obverse field. An even dark brown.

12 1796 S. 93. Draped bust. The "Hyphenated Date." Very Fine. The obverse sur-

MINT STATE 1797 GHOST REVERSE

Lot No. 16

16 1797 S. 130. The "Ghost" reverse, with obverse breaks. Uncirculated. Chocolate

and steel with traces of original mint color. The surface very mildly porous.
The entire coin is needle-sharp in strike, and if not the "Finest Known" surely
tied for honors. A conservative estimate for this lovely coin would be
$1,250.00.

coin is worthy of a bid approaching the four figure mark." It realized

U. S. HALF DOLLARS

CHARLES H. PATTEN
COLLECTION OF
UNITED STATES HALF DOLLARS

The cataloguer remembers when the late Charles Patten first started collecting
Half Dollars because I sold him his first coin. He collected with great enthusiasm
and amassed an almost complete set. In his later years he busily engaged himself
in upgrading the collection so that many of the coins are virtually unsurpassable.
We can only hope that the collectors buying these coins today will get the same
satisfaction out of collecting that Mr Patten did.

Lot No. 249

249 1794 The first year of issue. Very Fine, with a small dig above "RT” of LIBERTY,

otherwise the surfaces are superb. Scarce.

EXTREMELY RARE 1878 'S' HALF DOLLAR

Lot No. 418

418 1878 'S' Brilliant Uncirculated GEM. To call this coin proof-like almost

does it an injustice. Were it not for the mintmark the cataloguer
would have no hesitancy in calling this a Proof. It is needle-sharp
in strike, and but for one tiny bagmark near the 3rd star the coin is
absolutely flawless. The only specimen comparable to this sold in
the past decade was the R. L. Miles, Jr. coin sold by us in 1969 for
$3,200.00. This lovely, russet-toned specimen is so beautiful that the
cataloguer would not be at all surprised if this Classic Silver Rarity
was bid into five figures.
